Taking Chances: Winning with Probability

John Haigh

This book is intended for the reader with no previous knowledge of probability theory. However, as one reads further it becomes apparent that there are some challenging problems which the author brushes over in order to maintain the non-technical audience. The layman style of this book can make it a bit cumbersome for those with sufficient knowledge of probability theory. Nevertheless, there is still much that even an expert in probability theory can learn from this book. There are some interesting lines of thought presented for solutions to problems. Some of the problems are well known classics. There are at least three problems presented that have been used recently as interview question at the top investment banks. Therefore, this book is highly recommended to those preparing for job interviews. All the popular games of chance are covered in this book. These include: backgammon, `who wants to be a millionaire’, `the weakest link’, sports/spread betting, the national lottery, casino games, to name but a few.

In the current edition, the final chapter is devoted to teaching probability theory for lawyers.
